Kulasai Dasara 2026 is one of South India’s most visually extraordinary religious festivals - and it is very different from the grand royal-style Dasara celebrations many travellers may know from Mysuru.

Every year, huge numbers of devotees travel to the small coastal town of Kulasekarapattinam in southern Tamil Nadu.

The celebrations centre on Mutharamman Temple. In 2026, the festival begins with the ceremonial flag hoisting on 11 October and reaches its climax on 20 October with Mahisha Soorasamharam, symbolising the goddess’s victory over Mahishasura. Authorities are preparing for around 2.5 million visitors.

What makes Kulasai Dasara extraordinary are the devotees themselves. Many observe vows and fasting before dressing as Kali, Shiva, Murugan, Parvati, Ganesha and other divine or mythological figures. The streets fill with elaborate costumes, dramatic makeup, music, drums, dancing and religious processions. This is not simply a costume festival staged for visitors - it remains first and foremost a living devotional tradition.

The final days are particularly intense, culminating on 20 October with the Mahisha Soorasamharam ceremony.
