Nishagandhi will fill with music, devotion and celebration on September 4 as Trivandrum marks the birth of Krishna. 🦚

SKCON Trivandrum – Kudappanakunnu is organising a major public celebration of Sri Krishna Janmashtami at Nishagandhi Auditorium.

📅 September 4, 2026 🕔 From 5:00 PM onwards 🎟 Free 📍 Nishagandhi Auditorium, Kanakakkunnu, Thiruvananthapuram

🦚 What is Janmashtami?

Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna. In Vaishnava traditions, Krishna is worshipped as divine and is widely described as the eighth avatar of Vishnu. In 2026, the principal celebration falls on September 4.

Traditional celebrations often include bhajans and kirtan - communal devotional singing - prayer, fasting, decorated images of Krishna and special rituals. Midnight has particular significance because Krishna is traditionally believed to have been born at night.

Even if you are not religious, Janmashtami can be fascinating as a living cultural celebration, combining music, ritual and a very festive atmosphere.

🙏 What is ISKCON?

ISKCON stands for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, widely known as the Hare Krishna movement.

It was founded by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in New York in 1966 and belongs to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Its central practice is bhakti-yoga - devotional practice centred on Krishna, including study of the Bhagavad-gita, mantra meditation, communal chanting or kirtan, and vegetarian sacred food.

ISKCON is now an international movement, and its official guidance states that its temples and festivals welcome visitors from different backgrounds and faiths.

The Trivandrum celebration is organised by ISKCON Kudappanakunnu.

🎨 Also Happening That Day

The same venue hosts The Great Indian Heritage Children’s Fest 2026, organised by ISKCON Kudappanakunnu, with competitions including painting, classical singing and fancy dress. The prize ceremony starts at 5 PM, leading directly into the evening celebration. Registration for the children's competitions has already closed.

🛖About the Venue

Nishagandhi Auditorium is a large open-air auditorium in the grounds of Kanakakkunnu Palace and one of Trivandrum's major cultural venues, regularly hosting music, dance and state cultural festivals.

So this is much more than a small temple gathering - it is a celebration on one of the city's main cultural stages.

💡 Our Tip

If you have never experienced Janmashtami before, Nishagandhi looks like an easy introduction: it is public, free to attend and does not require any knowledge of Hindu rituals to simply come and enjoy the atmosphere.

We would arrive around 5:00–5:30 PM and keep the evening free.
