Can clothing tell the story of a society? And can photography reveal how ideas of freedom, dignity and identity have changed over time?

A thought-provoking photography exhibition has opened at the College of Fine Arts Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram.

Titled Kollavarsham 1202: Munne · Ippōzh · Ini - Archives of Uprising, the solo exhibition by conceptual photographer Jinson Abraham explores Kerala's social history through clothing, the human body and visual storytelling.

Archives of Uprising - More Than a Photography Exhibition

Throughout Kerala's history, clothing has carried meanings far beyond fashion. It has reflected social hierarchies, cultural expectations, dignity and the right to express one's identity. These are the themes at the heart of Abraham's work.

The exhibition features 28 photographic compositions involving 24 individuals, including seven new interconnected works. Following an earlier presentation in Kochi, the project now comes to the state capital.

The photographs explore identity, resistance, social change and personal freedom through carefully constructed visual narratives.

A Distinctive Photographic Approach

Rather than relying on digital photography, Abraham created the images using a Sinar F2 large-format camera and traditional 4×5-inch black-and-white sheet film.

Every composition is carefully staged, combining portraiture, costume design and historical references.Costume design and visual development were created in collaboration with Dinu Elizabeth Roy of Aham Designer Boutique.

Located in Palayam, the College of Fine Arts Kerala is one of the region's longstanding art education institutions. Its gallery regularly hosts exhibitions featuring contemporary artists, photographers and experimental creative projects.
